The United Kingdom has something to offer everyone
&#10
&#73&#102 you visit the United Kingdom you are almost certa&#105&#110&#32to find something that you will like. Despite its &#115&#109&#97ll size this island nation once ruled most of the &#119&#111&#114ld; at one point in their history there was no place where t&#104&#101&#32sun set on the British Empire. These days the UK i&#115&#32&#97 unique mix of the historical and the modern. Few &#108&#111&#99ations have had as much impact on the world as the&#32&#85&#110ited Kingdom so it is worth seeing what all the fu&#115&#115&#32is about.

Most trips to the UK begin in London. T&#104&#105&#115 is the capital city of England and this is where &#116&#104&#101 Queen spends most of her time. Scotland now has i&#116&#115&#32own<s></s> parliament and Wales also takes care of a lot &#111&#102&#32its own government, but all major decisions still &#103&#101&#116 made in London. For the visitor the city can mean&#32&#97&#32lot of things depending on where you go. If you wa&#110&#116&#32to see all the historical buildings you will need &#116&#111&#32give yourself a bit of time. It is worth making th&#101&#32&#101ffort to visit the British museum as this has the &#102&#105&#110est collections of artifacts in the world. If you &#119&#97&#110t something a bit different then visit Camden town&#46&#32&#84here is a great market here and this is this is wh&#101&#114&#101 some influential bands began playing; there are many music &#118&#101&#110ues in the area.

If you love the Beatles then you&#32&#119&#105ll need to visit Liverpool on the west coast of En&#103&#108&#97nd. This is an industrial city wit<s></s>h its own unique&#32&#99&#117lture which is a mix of Irish and English traditio&#110&#115&#46 The people of Liverpool pride themselves on being&#32&#117&#110ique and they claim to be a lot mor<s></s>e down to earth&#32&#116&#104en people in other parts of the country. North of &#76&#105&#118erpool is Manchester and this is another area that&#32&#104&#97s a lot to offer the visitor.

No visit to the Uni&#116&#101&#100 Kingdom is complete without making the journey to&#32&#83&#99otland. The Highlands offers some spectacular scen&#101&#114&#121 and if you have the time then a trip to the islan&#100&#32&#105s well worth the effort. Most visitors to Scotland&#32&#101&#110d up in Edinburgh. The castle in the city is stunn&#105&#110&#103 and a lot of entertainment is to be f<s></s>ound on Rose&#32&#83&#116reet. The Edinburgh comedy festival is one of the &#98&#105&#103gest of its kind in the world and attracts people &#102&#114&#111m every corner of the globe.

East of E<s></s>dinburgh is&#32&#71&#108asgow and this city has more of an industrial feel&#32&#116&#111 it. This was once the location of some of the bus&#105&#101&#115t shipyards in the world and this has really affec&#116&#101&#100 the local culture. The city is famous for its two&#32&#114&#105val football teams Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rang&#101&#114&#115. It has often been claimed that there is no other&#32&#99&#105ty in the world where two sports teams cause so mu&#99&#104&#32animosity. Attendance at a football match between &#116&#104&#101se rivals is an experience that few people will ev&#101&#114&#32forget. As well as football Glasgow is also becomi&#110&#103&#32increasing popular as a great place for nightlife.
&#10
&#10
&#82yan Fyfe is the owner of http://www.my-unit<s></s>edkingd&#111&#109&#46info/ – an information resource for all things related to United&#32&#75&#105ngdom including articles, news, movies and more.

There are many links between Ireland and Scotland and the two countries have developed a close relati&#111&#110&#115hip. In this article I’m going to explore the historical and cul&#116&#117&#114al links that lie at it’s heart.

From earliest times the two cou&#110&#116&#114ies, formed a single cultural, religious, linguist&#105&#99&#32and economic zone. The early Scots who came to Sco&#116&#108&#97nd from Ireland in the 5th and 6th centuries estab&#108&#105&#115hed the foundations for Irish – Scottish migrations, which conti&#110&#117&#101 to this day. Two of the largest migrations were:

&#117&#110&#100er the influence of the english who were keen to s&#104&#111&#114e up their foothold in Ireland, over 200,000 scots&#32&#101&#109igrated to Ireland. In the second half of the nine&#116&#101&#101nth century there was a mass exodus from Ireland t&#111&#32&#69ngland and Scotland as a result of poverty and fam&#105&#110&#101. Irish labour helped Scottish industrialisation t&#111&#32&#116ake root rapidly. In major cultural achievements, &#116&#111&#111, each country affected the other profoundly. The &#83&#99&#111ttish Enlightenment, began in Ireland in the work &#111&#102&#32the p<s></s>hilosopher Francis Hutcheson, who later moved&#32&#116&#111 Glasgow and greatly influenced the work of David &#72&#117&#109e and Adam Smith.

One of the key links between the&#32&#116&#119o counties in the large Diaspora of each. Tens of &#109&#105&#108lions of citizens with Scottish a<s></s>nd Irish ancestry&#32&#99&#97n be found across the globe in the United States, &#67&#97&#110ada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and New &#90&#101&#97land. Both countries are keen to engage on their D&#105&#97&#115poras. For example during the 2009 homecoming the &#83&#99&#111ttish government encouraged Scots to return to Sco&#116&#108&#97nd.

In Scotland today people of Irish decent are t&#104&#101&#32single largest minority ethnic group, and there ar&#101&#32&#97 large number of Scots living in Ireland. The engl&#105&#115&#104’issue’brought both countries together – the need to preserve their identity in the shadow o&#102&#32&#97 powerful neighbouring culture. I will now take a &#108&#111&#111k at some of the shared aspects of culture – celti cmusic, dress&#32&#97&#110d sporting activities.

A commonality between the c&#117&#108&#116ure if the two countries in clearly shown in the w&#101&#97&#114ing of the kilt – a clear link between the two nations is. Irish&#32&#107&#105lts are traditionally plain in either saffron of g&#114&#101&#101n, with Irish county tartans a more recent variati&#111&#110&#46

Sport is another areas that has links, interestin&#103&#108&#121 the Irish-Scots were instrumental in the formatio&#110&#32&#111f Celtic Football Clubs Hibernian and Dundee Unite&#100&#46&#32Indeed, these<s></s> teams were originally formed to prov&#105&#100&#101 recreational facilities for Irish immig<s></s>rants.

Cel&#116&#105&#99 music has a strong historical traditional in Scot&#108&#97&#110d and Ireland with both using fiddles, bagpipes, w&#104&#105&#115tles and bodhrans. Often, the term Celtic music is&#32&#97&#112plied to the music of Ireland and Scotland however&#44&#32&#105t is notable that Irish and Scottish traditional m&#117&#115&#105cians tend to point out the differences between th&#101&#32&#116oo.

Today the relationships between Ireland and Sc&#111&#116&#108and continues to<s></s> be shaped by the changes to the p&#111&#108&#105tical dynamic brought about by devolution in Scotl&#97&#110&#100, the Peace Process in Northern Ireland as well as&#32&#116&#104e deeper integrat<s></s>ion into the European Union, whic&#104&#32&#105s and will remain Scotland and Ireland’s most significant econom&#105&#99&#32relationship.

Why is it that the biggest, the strongest, the stone hearted male of the human&#32&#114&#97ce can be reduced to tears by defeat of their foot&#98&#97&#108l team?

As many fans fear their wonderful game is &#98&#101&#105ng taken over by the pursuit of wealth in the elit&#101&#32&#116eams, especially here in Europe, we still feel the&#32&#100&#101epest of passions for the sport we love. The ecsta&#99&#121&#32of victory and the despair of a defeat – relegation is just too &#109&#117&#99h to stand. But why are these feelings so strong?

&#70&#111&#111tball can often become an all consuming passion wh&#105&#99&#104 can occupy our minds for most of the waking day, &#110&#111&#116 to mention the nightly dreams of trophy success. &#73&#116&#32becomes the thing above all else which we crave, n&#111&#116&#32just the winning but the sport itself.

We want to &#116&#97&#108k about football, watch it on the TV, go to the gr&#111&#117&#110d at the weekend. We want to discuss it, read abou&#116&#32&#105t, hear about it. We want the shirts, the poster, &#116&#104&#101 mug. Football becomes a way of life that, in many&#32&#111&#102 the towns and cities, defines a whole region. Liv&#101&#114&#112ool, Manchester, Rome and Milan – These are red and blue cities,&#32&#100&#105vided (or united) by the support of one team over &#116&#104&#101 other local rival. Real Madrid and Barcelona are &#101&#110&#111ugh to divide every non-Spaniard over the question&#32&#111&#102 ‘the best team in Spain’.

Some divisions are more deep rooted than just picki&#110&#103&#32the side you like the best. In Glasgow, Scotland t&#104&#101&#32choice <s></s>of Celtic or Rangers is not a footballing o&#110&#101&#32to make, here you choose your religion first – the football team&#32&#99&#111mes as standard. Other great teams have been creat&#101&#100&#32to rival each other on the basis of class or belie&#102&#44&#32the former clubs of eastern europe are full of ex-&#97&#114&#109y teams.

The fact is we choose our team, for what &#101&#118&#101r reason, and we stick with them through thick and&#32&#116&#104in. Football becomes a part of your life, a member&#32&#111&#102 your family and you love it. It makes you glad an&#100&#32&#105t makes yo<s></s>u sad and you still want more of it.

The city of Glasgow is infamous for the football fanaticism embedded in the city’s culture and&#32&#118&#105sitors may find themselves inextricably drawn towa&#114&#100&#115 this phenomenon during their stay.

Glasgow is dom&#105&#110&#97ted by the two clubs of Celtic and Rangers which i&#110&#32&#116urn dominate the Scottish league. Together they ma&#107&#101&#32up one of international football’s most heated rivalries, known &#97&#115&#32‘the Old Firm’.

Celtic

Celtic<s></s> were the first team from the British Isles to wi&#110&#32&#116he European Cup in 1967 (today’s Champions League) and succeeded&#32&#105&#110 etching their name into the annals of football hi&#115&#116&#111ry with a 2-1 win over Inter Milan.

The club’s home is Celtic Pa&#114&#107&#44 a 60,000-capcity ground known for its raucous atm&#111&#115&#112here on European nights and Old Firm derbies again&#115&#116&#32Rangers. There are also 60-minute tours offered an&#100&#32&#97 museum on the site for fans to explore.

Situated &#105&#110&#32the Parkhead area of the city, travelers staying a&#116&#32&#111ne of the Glasgow Hostels will find the stadium &#105&#115&#32easy to reach via public transport.

Rangers

Ranger&#115&#32&#104ave enjoyed a similarly successful career in natio&#110&#97&#108 and international football and reached the final &#111&#102&#32the UEFA Cup just last May, although they eventual&#108&#121&#32lost 2-0 to the impressive Zenit St Petersburg tea&#109&#46
&#10
They play at Ibrox Stadium which lies five kilomet&#101&#114&#115 to the west of the city center and is again easil&#121&#32&#97ccessible from most Glasgow hostels thanks to the &#115&#117&#98way system.

The Rivalry Continues

Old Firm games a&#114&#101&#32not for the faint-hearted, however<s></s> – packed with boisterous sing&#105&#110&#103 and chanting, the tension between the two sides m&#97&#107&#101s for one seriously intense sporting event!

Travel&#101&#114&#115 should also be advised that ticket<s></s>s for these inf&#97&#109&#111us games sell out quickly and must be pre-booked w&#101&#108&#108 in advance.

But football in Glasgow is not just l&#105&#109&#105ted to the derbies and Celtic and Rangers both reg&#117&#108&#97rly play other games as part of the Scottish Premi&#101&#114&#32League. These clashes are usually more cordial aff&#97&#105&#114s, although equally entertaining, and provide a ra&#116&#104&#101r more sedate sample of the city’s football culture.

Glasgow is the perfect place for a short break, holiday or a day out exploring. It is home to internationally famous att&#114&#97&#99tions all of which are close together and easily r&#101&#97&#99hed. Lying right in the centre of Scotland, Glasgo&#119&#32&#104as superb transport links not only within the city&#32&#105&#116self, but also to and from the outskirts and count&#114&#121&#115ide. From museums and art galleries to the best sh&#111&#112&#112ing outside of London, Glasgow has something for e&#118&#101&#114ybody.

Culture

Glasgow has a long association wit&#104&#32&#116he arts and its superb art galleries and museums r&#101&#102&#108ect this. The Burrell Collection in Pollok Country&#32&#80&#97rk should be at the top of your to do list. Sir Wi&#108&#108&#105am Burrell gathered thousands of pieces and gifted&#32&#116&#104em all to the city of Glasgow in 1944. 9000 are on&#32&#100&#105splay. Since then, people from all over the world &#104&#97&#118e flocked to see important works of European art b&#121&#32&#102igures such as Degas and Rembrandt, artifacts from&#32&#97&#110cient Rome, Greece and Egypt, tapestries, sculptur&#101&#115&#32and a<s></s>rchitectural features such as medieval arches&#32&#116&#104at have been incorporated into t<s></s>he building’s structure.

Also a&#32&#109&#117st is House for an Art Lover. Designed by Charles &#82&#101&#110nie Ma<s></s>ckintosh and lying in beautiful Bellahouston&#32&#80&#97rk next to Victorian walled gardens, it remains a &#117&#110&#105que and exciting venue. Each room contains design,&#32&#102&#117rniture and colour schemes from Mackintosh’s original portfolio,&#32&#119&#104ich gives a detailed insight into <s></s>every aspect of &#104&#105&#115 work.

No visit to Glasgow would be complete with&#111&#117&#116 a trip to the Kelvingrove Museum & Art Galleries. It is one of Eu&#114&#111&#112e’s most important museums and underwent a three year refurbishm&#101&#110&#116. Opening again in 2006, many new features were ad&#100&#101&#100 to the huge collection, such as the History Disco&#118&#101&#114y Centre and multimedia cinema. The most famous ex&#104&#105&#98it is Salvador Dali’s s Christ of Saint John of the Cross.

Shopp&#105&#110&#103

Glasgow is one of the UK’s favourite shopping destinations, and&#32&#111&#110ly London offers a larger range of high street opt&#105&#111&#110s. Shopping in Glasgow is easy as the main city ce&#110&#116&#114e shopping district is largely pedestrianised. The&#32&#116&#104ree main shopping streets of Buchanan Street, Argy&#108&#101&#32Street and Sauchiehall Street contain not only the&#32&#102&#97miliar High Street shops, but also centres and arc&#97&#100&#101s full of niche market shops such as the Argyll Ar&#99&#97&#100e, which has been a focus for jewellery shops for &#110&#101&#97rly 200 years.
Golden Decade of Sport
&#84&#104&#101re’s never been a <s></s>better time to consider entering the sports in&#100&#117&#115try. Over the next 10 years we <s></s>have lots of big ev&#101&#110&#116s happening in the UK which the government hopes w&#105&#108&#108 help establish sport and fitness as a much bigger&#32&#112&#97rt of our daily lives and encourage younger people&#32&#116&#111 be more active. Here’s a few examples of the main events happen&#105&#110&#103 over <s></s>the next 10 years:

2010
Ryder Cup, Celtic Man&#111&#114&#44 Newport, Wales
World Lacrosse Championships, Manch&#101&#115&#116er
Women’s Rugby World Cup, London
ATP Tennis World Tour finals, T&#104&#101&#32O2, London

Wha<s></s>t Can You Expe&#99&#116&#63
The average salary after training is between 20k a&#110&#100&#3235k in the sport and fitness industry. You can exp&#101&#99&#116 to have to work shift patterns and weekends in a &#108&#111&#116 of cases. Working in the industry can offer inter&#110&#97&#116ional opportunities as sport transcends boundaries&#32&#116&#121pically there in other industries. The sports indu&#115&#116&#114y is expected to continue to grow at a much faster&#32&#114&#97te than the rest of the UK economy so domestic opp&#111&#114&#116unities should increase.

Which Sector or Specialis&#97&#116&#105on
There are far more opportunities in the leisure &#105&#110&#100ustry than in sports in roughly an 80/20 split. Ev&#101&#114&#121one has heard of the big names in the industry but&#32&#109&#111st clubs and organisations are actually quite smal&#108&#32&#105n terms of numbers of employees. This means that y&#111&#117&#32can feel like you’re contributing much more than with a small or&#103&#97&#110isation but also that it may be harder to find wor&#107&#32&#105nitially.

Planning Your Career
An absolute priority&#32&#104&#97s to be to plan your career. Investigate what rout&#101&#115&#32are open to you and think about what is realistic &#98&#117&#116 challenging. Yo<s></s>u can change your plan as often as&#32&#121&#111u like but you should always have a career plan.

S&#117&#109&#109ary
There’s never been a better time to develop a career in the s&#112&#111&#114ts industry. With some detailed research and caree&#114&#32&#112lanning you should be able to carve out your<s></s> ideal&#32&#99&#97reer with the very real possibilities of internati&#111&#110&#97l travel and working for big brand names.
